We mine for raw materials such as oil, minerals, and metals, make products and throw them away after use. This ‘take-make-dispose’ approach has brought us high living standards, wealth and comfort. However, the current model also leads to social inequality, depletion of natural resources, environmental pollution and contributes to climate change.

In our linear economy, many products don’t last very long. In order to cut production costs and sales prices, many products are ‘designed for the dump’. Consumers are encouraged to replace broken products with new ones instead of repairing them. Product lifespans can also be shortened by fast technological innovation, especially in the case of consumer electronics, such as smartphones. Triggered by new designs and functionalities, many consumers experience a phenomenon called “perceived obsolescence”: even though their old smartphone still works, they replace it with a new product.

The circular economy rethinks all aspects of the ‘take-make-dispose’ idea: how to manage resources, how to make and use products, and what to do with them at the end-of-life. Products are designed for longer use and reuse. They are well maintained and repaired, have a high second-hand value and can easily be taken apart and turned into new products. They are made of recycled or bio-based materials, reducing material losses through landfill and incineration. In this way, product lives are extended and material cycles are closed, minimising the need for new materials and energy. At the same time, environmental pressures linked to resource extraction, emissions and waste are reduced.
