The Water Cycle

Explain the water cycle and the processes within it!

Write in your books your ideas of what the water cycle is!

MORE THAN

75%

OF THE EARTH'S SURFACE IS WATER

AND THIS NEVER GETS USED UP!

All this water gets reused in a process called

The Water Cycle

The water cycle involves 4 main processes.

The Earth's Water

Puddles

Ocean

Rivers/Lakes

Ground Water

All of Earth's water is either stored on the surface in rivers, lakes, oceans, and puddles or in the ground which plants can use to grow! This water is heated by the sun and turned into water vapour in a process called evaporation!

1. Evaporation

Evaporation is where water is heated to turn it from a liquid to a gas! In the water cycle, the water on earth is heated by the SUN!

2. Condensation

Once the water has been evaporated into water vapour, it rises and cools to form clouds! This process is called condensation!

3. Precipitation

The clouds then get so full of water vapour, they start to drop water from the sky! This is RAIN or, if it's cold enough, can also be SNOW! The scientific name for rain and snow is PRECIPITATION!

4. Collection

Puddles

Ocean

Rivers/Lakes

Ground Water

The precipitation (snow or rain) then collects back into the Earth's water and the whole process starts again!

We are going to create our own water cycle experiment!

BUT, before we do... lets make some predictions!

1. Why are you doing this investigation? What is this bag of water representing? 2. What do you think will happen to the water in the bag? 3. Where do you think evaporation will occur? 4. Where do you think condensation will occur? 5. Where do you think precipitation will occur?

BUT, before we do... lets make some predictions!

1. Why are you doing this investigation? What is this bag of water representing?

We are doing this investigation to show how water changes through different processes in the water cycle. The bag of water represents the earth and all the earth's water processes. This includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.

BUT, before we do... lets make some predictions!

2. What do you think will happen to the water in the bag?

During the experiment, I predict that the water in the bag will going through all the stages of the water cycle. This includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection!

BUT, before we do... lets make some predictions!

3. Where do you think evaporation will occur?

I predict that evaporation will occur on the left side of the plastic bag because this is where I have drawn my sun!

BUT, before we do... lets make some predictions!

3. Where do you think condensation will occur?

I predict that we will be able to see the water vapour condensing at the very top of the plastic bag as tiny clouds. I predict this because I think the water will continue to rise to the very top before hitting the top and becoming cool.

BUT, before we do... lets make some predictions!

3. Where do you think precipitation will occur?

I predict that the water vapour that has condensed at the top will precipitate from the right side of the bag where I have drawn my raindrops. I predict that the water will precipitate as tiny raindrops from the tiny clouds.

BUT, before we do... lets make some predictions!
