what is poetry?
Poetry is a form of literature that uses language in a specific way. Poetry is " a vital and meaningful form of expression by which the individual poet may convey his thoughts and feelings on experience" Ogungbesan and Woolger (1978).
Forms of Poetry
1. lyric poem
A lyric poem is a relatively short, non - narrative poem in which a single speaker unfolds a state of mind or an emotional state.
a. Ode; a long lyric poem with serious theme written in an elevated style. b. Elegy: is a ceremonial lament for the death of a particular person. c. Sonnet: it is the most widespread and most formal of lyric poem. it is also a love poem which dealt with the lover's sufferings ang hope.
2. narrative poem
Narrative poetry gives a verbal depiction, in verse, of a series of connected events and it drives characters through a plot. It is always conveyed by a narrator.
a. Epic: it operates on a large scale, both in length and topic, such as the founding of a notion (Virgil's Aeneid)or a start of world history (Milton's Paradise Lost). b. Mock-epic; makes use of epic conventions, like the elevated style and the assumption that the topic is of great importance, to deal with completely insignificant accurrences. c. Ballad: is a song , initially transmitted orally , which tells a story.
3. didactic poetry
The purpose of didactic poem is principally to teach some lesson. This can take the form of very precise instructions, such as how to catch a fish, as in James Thomson's The Seasons.Didactic poetry separately refers to poems that contain a clear moral or message or purpose to convey to its readers.
3.3 The Language of Poetry
poetry is simply the renewal of words. whenever we pick up a poem to read, the impression we are given is that language is spiritual, as insubstantial as breath on a winter's day.
3.3.1 Poetry and Sounds Patterns
the sound of a well chosen word can strengthen a mood or make an idea more forceful. the sounds of words can also create a musical quality in a piece of writing.
Alliteration: is the repitition of the same consonantat the beggining of wods that are close together.
Assonance: is used to add a musical quality to a poem
4.Rhyme
Rhyme gives a musical quality to poetry. rhyme occurs at the ends of lines in a poem.
Onomatopoeia
poets use this to add excitement to the sound of a poem. It is the imitation of natural sounds by words.
