What is a Discouse marker

A sentence is like a chain of words

In simple terms, we can class discourse markers as lexical expressions which link discourse segments while managing its structure. In not so simple terms, many researchers agree that there is no clear definition or function of discourse mark

Types of Discourse markers

Yael Maschler

Yael Maschler is a Professor at the University of Haifa, Palestine. Her research into Discourse has helped proivde a better understanding of the types of Disourse markers,

Um, well the different types of discourse markers

Discourse markers can appear in various word classes such as Prepositional phrases (in fact) or adverbial (basically, so). The researcher, Yael Maschler divided discourse markers in four general categories: cognitive, interpersonal, referential and structural.

Locating Discourse markers

Where in the sentences do they occur?

Discourse markers act as the bridge between statements, and therefore may occur at any part of the sentence. This is due to both the type and function of Disourse marker used.

Function of Discourse markers

Discourse markers were once coined as empty "fillers" with no function. Now depending on the function, discourse markers may differ in location. The different functions may be: backchanneling, discourse planning, hedging, reformulation, stressing and topic changes.

How it is used

Function

MLE disourse maker - innit innit is a common phrase in MLE, usually used at the end of a phrase (refer to line 54) Referential Marker - "and then" Both words are considered discourse markers, used to introduce and create further depth into the sentence. (refer to line 54)

The function of innit is to project a question of isnt it/ is it not? In other asking an affirmative at the end of a declaritve statement. This can be considered an equivalent to Americans using "you know?". (refer to line 54) The use of "and then" is a referntial marker which helps indicate sequence, causality and coordination of utterances. Therefore helping setup/introductory. (refer to line 260)
