LESSON THREE
COVALENT BOND
COVALENT BOND
Results in the sharing of valence electrons. This bonding occurs between two non - metals.
A neutral particle that forms as a result of electron sharing is called a MOLECULE.
Naming Covalent Compounds
Name the first non - metal.
The second non - metal is named by changing its suffix with - ide.
A prefix such as mono, di, tri, etc. is used in front of each element to denote the number of atoms present in the element.
Prefixes for Naming Covalent Compounds
Exceptions:
The first element in the formula never uses the word mono.
CO
Monocarbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide
Exceptions:
To avoid awkward pronounciation, drop the final letter in the prefix when the element name begins with a vowel.
CO
Carbon monooxide
Carbon monoxide
Example #1:
SO
Sulfur dioxide
Example #2:
Nitrogen trifluoride
NF
Example #3:
N H
Dinitrogen tetrahydride
Example #4:
Dinitrogen pentoxide
N O
Name the following covalent compounds.
1. CCl 2. N O 3. NBr 4. As O 5. NO
Write the chemical formula of the following compounds.
1. Sulfur dichloride2. Tetraphosphorous hexoxide 3. Oxygen difluoride 4. Sulfur hexafluoride 5. Tetrasulfur tetranitride
