The Space Race
In Summary
The Space Race was political conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union that occurred during the Cold War period that followed the development of Soviet nuclear technology. This started and arms race in which the two countries continuously worked to out-do each other in nuclear development and spanned into space. This prompted more physics and astronomy to be taught in schools, so students would eventually go into the workforce and develop new technologies. The Space Race began with the launch of the Sputnik 1 and effectively ended with the Apollo 11 mission and the first man on the moon. While the Space Race started and perpetuated some of the issues in our society today, it also jump started scientific advancements in the fields of astronomy and engineering. Perhaps the most important impact of the Space Race was that it shrank our perception of the size of Earth and contributed to higher interconnectivity between countries.

First Man-made Object in Space
The Signing of the Outer Space Treaty
First Human On Another Celestial Body
The Apollo 11 mission from the United States sent three astronauts to the moon. This was the first time any human had set foot anywhere other than Earth. It marked the end of the Space Race because the last feasible milestone had been reached and the U.S. had won despite the Soviet Union leading most of the way.
The Sputnik 1, built by Soviet scientists, was the first manmade object in space. It was a satelite that could transmit radio signals back to Earth. This device sowed fear among Americans and prompted them to accelerate their space program, marking the beginning of the Space Race.
A total of 91 countries signed the treaty that was agreed upon by the U.S. and USSR. It stated that no weapons of mass destruction could be placed in space and that countries could not claim celestial bodies as their land. This treaty was meant to leave space as a non-hostile zone where any country could explore.

The Hubble Space telescope
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was launched in 1990 and became the first telescope to be placed in outer space. The visual quality of the HST was better than that of telescopes on Earth because the lens wasn't obstructed by particles in the atmosphere. The HST was such an impressive invention that is remains in operation today as one of the main sources of outer space observations and images.
