What are multimodal Texts?

Multimodal Texts are texts that use two or more modes. It involves elements of audio, visual and/or animations along with written language. It can be paper-based like comics and picture books. It can also be a live performance like theatrical performances.,

purpose of multimodal Texts

Multimodal Texts are used to enhance or complement a text. It also provides readers additional ways to understand the texts or convey their ideas in a much easier way.

5 mODES OF MULTIMODAL TEXTS

There are 5 modes or meaning-making systems to help create meaning, and those are:

This mode covers still and moving images using colors, shapes, style, size, and perspective. From the word "visual" which means "relating to vision or sight", it refers to the images or characters we see. This is used to entertain, represent feelings, and express details.

VISUAL

MEANING

Examples are picture books, photos, and comics.

SPATIAL

The spatial mode is about the physical arrangement, organization and proximity of the text. This covers environmental and architectural spaces, direction, position and organization of the objects in space.

Examples are brochures, websites and magazines.

MEANING

The Audio Meaning or the Aural mode focuses more on the sound. This mode is used to signal information, such as feelings, actions, and responses, and convey a message through sounds.

Examples are music, sound effects, noises, ambient noises, and even silence.

MEANING

The written-linguistic mode covers written or spoken language. The mode includes word choice, the delivery of written or spoken text, the organization of words into sentences and paragraphs, and the development and coherence of words and ideas. It is widely used as it can be both read or heard on paper and on different platforms.

Examples areare podcasts, speeches, poems, spoken poetry, and books.

GESTURAL

The gestural mode refers to the way movement is interpreted. Facial expressions, hand gestures, body language and interaction between people are all gestural modes. This also uses rhythm, speed, stillness and angles.
