Equality on trial

-second sequence-

Introduction

Introduction

In this second chapter, we worked on the fact that everyone should be judged fairly in front of justice, but yet some judges may be corrupted

So we can ask ourselves if "equality" mean the same for all US citizen ?

1. when they see us

-It is a netflix series which deals with the case of the central park five : in 1989, five black and hispanic boys were arrested and accused of beating a white woman. They were then manipulating to confess the crime, even if they hadn't done anything.

-This is a very emotional series, made to touch people, made them realize how the system is unfair, and excpect them to react. The director believes that the system must be rebuilt completly to erase these injustices.

2- Champions of justice

-The most important things on this painting are the people walking on the center, only colored people with different jobs, and the blindfolded black Lady Justice on the background.

-The aim of this picture is to represent a fair system, justice, were everyone would be judge fairly, without caring of their ethnie, and where everyone can do the job they want, without being rejected because of their skin

color. This is a support for equal representation and freedom in courts.

3. Brown vs board of education

-The extract we study is when M. Marshall is adressing to the Justices, at the Supreme court. He asks them to reconsider the law that states that it's legal to segregate schools : he wants black children to be able to attend white schools. -He wants that because segregation impacts young kids' self esteem and well being, and humiliates them. This situation shows us how unfair the laws are with black people, with the reject of children based only on their skin color.

4. To kill a mocking bird

-This graphic novel tells the story of a young lawyer who agrees to defend a black men falsely accused of raping a white woman

-Trough this graphic novel, we can see the inequalities that the accused suffers in court : racial prejudice, unreliable testimonie or the absence of medical evidence. Because of his skin color, he havn't any chance to be declare as not guilty, which horrible, and totally unfair for the placce where everyone should be treated the same way

5. Racism on trial by Terrace Martin

- In the spoken word intro, Curry talks about social injustices, police violence, and the increasing violence on the USA

-He denounces the inequalities colored people live on trial, and also talks about the fact that by considering and judging them differents as the rest of the population, they encouraged them to think that, to lose their self esteem and their human valuses. The anger they got from because judge different is detourned to show them as monster, even if they didn't do anything.

Conclusion

Conclusion

This chapter shows us that equality doesn't mean the same for every US citizen.

Indeed, as we see with the previous documents I presented, the justice system isn't fair for everyone : colored people are the most affected by these injustices, and women can also be concerned, especially on a court job.
