Introduction - Dhiya
The axial skeleton forms the central axis of the body and includes the bones of the skull, ossicles of the middle ear, hyoid bone of the throat, vertebral column, and the thoracic cage
In the human skeleton, it consists of 80 bones

The Skull
The Skull - the skeleton of the head
Main function: - To provide structure to the head - To provide Protection to the brain (cerebellum, cerebrum, brainstem) and orbits of the eyes. - It also protects nerves and blood vessels that stimulate brain, facial muscles, and skin. Nourishment: The skull recieves oxygenated blood from the common carotid artery. The remainder of blood supply comes from the vertebral artery.

Parts of the Skull
- 8 bones - joined to each other - permanently fixed
Types of bones in the Cranium: - Flat bones. these bones are thin and flat, though some of them have a slight curve. -Irregular bones. These are bones with complex shapes that don’t fit into any of the other categories.
Cranium - The Brain Box
+ info
How are the bones in the cranium joined?
- Cranial bones are held together by joints called sutures, which are made of thick connective tissue. - They’re irregularly shaped, allowing them to tightly join all the uniquely shaped cranial bones. - The sutures don’t fuse until adulthood, which allows the brain to continue growing during childhood and adolescence.

Facial bones of the skull
- 14 bones - forms the face
Main Functions: - The facial skeleton serves to protect the brain- Houses and protects the sense organs of smell, sight, and taste - Provides a frame on which the soft tissues of the face can act to facilitate : eating facial expression breathing speech.
Foramina
=>Foramina are apertures (canals) that scattered throughout the bones of the skull. => These openings commonly function as passageways for nerves and vessels =>At the base of the skull, in the occipital bone, is the largest foramen of the skull, the =>Vertebral arteries and the spinal cord pass through this opening.

Vertebral column
Vertebral column
Commonly known as backbone/spine 33 ring-like bones called vertebrae( 26 when fused) 5 groups when divided
- Cervical vertebrae-7
- Thoracic vertebrae – 12
- Lumbar vertebrae – 5
- Sacrum vertebrae – 5(fused into 1)
- Coccyx vertebrae – 4(fused into 1)
Curved to maintain body posture and reduce damage.
Structure of vertebra
Ring like structure:
- Lower part – cylinder called centrum
- Opposite ends are flat
- Formed by 2 neural arches from the sides of the centrum
- Spinal cord runs through the neural canal.

The Sternum
The Sternum
It connects to the ribs via cartilage and forms the front of the rib cage.
The Sternum is a long flat bone in the central part of the chest.
+ info
+ info
Therefore it is a vital protection organ. Along with the ribs, it encompasses the heart, lungs and major blood vessels.

The Ribs
RIBS
Hyaline cartilage
- 1-7 are called as the true ribs.
- 8-9 dosen' t directly connect with the sternum but it joins with the 7th rib with the help of hayline cartilage,it also know as false ribs.
- 11-12 are called as the floating ribs.
