EXPRESSION AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE SELF

ABOUT THE TOPIC

Construction and self-expression are linked: expression reveals as much as it engenders an identity. The story of a life, of adventures, or more simply of an experience, can take on a universal or collective dimension in the case of imaginary heroes who have become myths or who embody national values such as Robinson Crusoe or Huckleberry Finn or real people involved in the life of the city such as Winston Churchill or Barack Obama. Anglophone culture is rich in mythological figures (early civilizations), fictional figures (theatre, novels or short stories) or real figures (women or politicians, artists) building itself according to initiatory processes or through individual expression. Construction and self-expression have fostered the emergence of new artistic movements or genres. British romanticism or American transcendentalism thus place the individual and individual expression at the heart of their aesthetic, philosophical or even political project, whereas expressionist art is based on the expression of subjectivity and aims at a strong emotional reaction. Memoirs or autobiographies of public women or men, fictional autobiographies and diaries, letter novels, self-portraits in painting give to hear or see assertive personalities. Picaresques novels, educational novels and road novels or road movies offer, as for them, initiation narratives with more or less didactic value.
