Time Distribution

How do i use my time?

Whether you are new to post-secondary, or looking for tips to improve your study effectiveness, learning to manage your time will reward you in your academic and personal life. The first step to managing your time effectively is to figure out how you use your time. Keeping a time use log for a few days can help you build an accurate picture. Remember to include activities that are done every day, including sleep, grooming and meals. Be sure to include any time commuting, exercizing, socializing or working. Finally, don't forget to include the hours you spend in class each week!

Time Studying

How much time should I be studying each week?

2-3 hoursstudying

Per course credit

Most post-secondaries suggest that students spend at least 2 - 3 hours studying each week for every course credit. If you are taking 1 class (3 credits), you should be studying on average for 6 - 9 hours each week, which includes reading, working on assignments, as well as reviewing content. If you are taking 5 courses, you should be studying between 30 - 45 hours each week. If you do not have enough time for studying, you may have to:- Make changes to your schedule- Reduce your work hours- Lighten your course load

How do i get the most out of my classes?

While ensuring that you fit time into your schedule to study, it's also important to ensure you are using that time wisely! Before class, be sure you review any notes from the previous class, as well as prepare for any new material by completing the assigned reading and making notes. While in class, participation, active listening and taking notes can go a long way. Take time after class to review and edit your notes, as well as prepare any study materials. Finally, in preparation for exams, prepare and review mind maps, flash cards, summary notes, and complete self-tests during your study sessions.

Plan your week

How DO I PLAN MY WEEK?

Planning your week and semester will ensure assignments and exams don't creep up on you! In planning your week be sure to start by recording your classes, followed by all regularly scheduled activities such as meals, meetings, sports, work, etc. Schedule in preview time (5-30 minutes) immediately before class to review previous material, or upcoming material. Also, be sure to review any notes within 24 hours of class as this will help commit material to memory. Also be sure to set aside time for intensive study sessions and weekly review for each course you are taking. Finally, include time for physical activity, personal time, and socialization!
