introduction

We will do the analysis of the external part of the book, that is to say, the cover, we will also do the internal analysis of the book. In which we will talk about the table of contents, the syllabuses; in addition, we will focus on two units of the book, in which we will check if the syllabuses are correct or have changed. The exercises and theory that appears and if we would remove, adapt, or add something so that the book adapts as much as possible to the needs of the learners.

External evaluation

Front cover

At the bottom of the front cover, we can see on the left side the logo of the publisher Richmond and on the right side that it is a book for starters and that it is the teacher's book. In my opinion, I think you should put which grade of primary education this book is aimed at.

If we look at the cover of the book we can see that above it is the title of the book which is called “Sign up, #New Edition”, clearly specifies that it is for teaching English. If we look at the lower part of the title, we can observe in the central part of the cover, we can see a lot of emoticons and things related to new technologies, this makes us think that it could be a textbook based on the use of technologies to facilitate students' learning.

External evaluation

Back cover

We can see that there are two paragraphs that tell us what we are going to find in the book and what kind of students it is aimed at or the previous level they should have to be able to understand the lessons. Here we will find the materials that students and teachers will have, if they decide to choose these textbooks.

At the bottom of the back cover we can see: on the left hand side the name of the publisher and web page, and on the left hand side we can see that it is aimed at level A1 or A2 of the common European framework. We can also see the ISBN of the textbook it is: 978-950-46-6117-7

Internal evaluation

We can see that it has 6 units with different titles with which we can try to get to know the topic of each unit

If you look closely, you can see that it is a table of contents that contains more details. We can see that there is division by units and these units have sub-points for the syllabuses.

In our case we are going to look at unit 1 which is called new friends. This unit is divided into different lessons, specifically 1, 2 and 3, and we can see which pages begin each of the lessons. These different lessons are divided into different parts which are: function, grammar, lexis, and recycling.

  • In this section we find different subtitles such as: components, characteristics, for teachers, for students, etc.
  • In these parts we find tips for teachers, to work on the different topics or methodologies to be used, as for example in the interactive activities, which are e-practice exercises.
  • We can also see that the students' books have a classification through icons, and with them the students will know what they are going to work on that day.

This page is interesting for you to read as a teacher, this can make you take some ideas.

Analysis of two textbook units

For the analysis of the two units of the textbook, we will focus on unit 1 "New friends" and unit 2 "Our favourite things".For the analysis, we will focus on the format of the book and the activities and exercises that we will find in the two units. In both units one and two we find a new table of contents and how to start the unit in class. As we can see it is divided into three lessons and the contents that are worked on are lexis, grammar, phonology and finally communicative and learning task.

Unit 1 & 2

In both units there is a useful tip language section, which gives advice on how to help students practise a particular part of the syllabus.

We can find that some of these optional activities are transdisciplinary since they work with different subjects. We can also see optional activities in which, if we look at them, most of them are games andin some of these games we can see how the TPR methodology is introduced.

If we go to the end of unit 2, we come to what is called project, in this part we should find a revision of unit 1 and 2. In this part we can see a series of exercises that go over the topics covered during these units.

Modifications

I would create is a concept map with the content of the units, so that my students can access it from any device and print it if they need to.

Modifications

I have created another resource to work on theme 1. In this resource we will work on flags and therefore nationalities. After doing this exercise, the students will have to get into groups of 4 people and choose a country that has appeared in the game. Then they will have to look for information that they will present to their classmates.

Disadvantages

Conclusions

- The front cover. - I think they follow a very classical line of English language learning. - At the beginning it seemed that a lot of work was going to be done through new technologies, but as I said before, the exercises followed a very classical line and that is the reason why I have created new resources through new technologies. - Sometimes is very closed.

Advantages

I thought were very good in the textbook: - The tips that appear for students. - There are optional activities. For all these reasons, I think it is an adequate book for a basic level of English, and it is a good textbook for teaching, but modifying some of the exercises or the way of doing them.

Thank you!
