How do we associate housing with native culture??
Teepee's,What do we think?
When we think teepee...
When people today think of a teepee we think of native americans. We think nomadic tribes that need housing but with easy take down so they can follow a heard of animals. We don't associate teepee's with much else other than the plains indians such as the Lipan Apache, Comanche, and Kiowa. They migrated with the buffalo so they could keep their food source close.
WHat were they used for and how were they made
There were many different uses for the teepees. Some native cultures developed a spiritual conecctioni to the teepee's and the different parts of it were connected to the mother and father. Some tribes painted images on them and the paintings reflected the tribe and the earth. The plains indians like the teepee housing because it could be packed up in an hour to follow the heards wherever they were headed. They could withstand most weather conditions which made them handy for wherever the traveled to. With the hole at the top of it they were able to have fires inside and the smoke would be able to escape whilst also keeping in the heat. They were made with long poles and buffalo hide. Women were usually the ones to set them up so men could hunt and gather resources.

when & why
when did they stop using them
why did they stop using them
The stoped use of teepee's
1800's
with the immigration of the European's there was a loss of the bison heards in the 19th century. Most plain indian tribes coped with the lost of the traditional ways of life for a while. Soon they were all forced into federal reserves by the government and the teepee's gave way to the more permanent housing. However some teepee structures are still used today to hold spiritual and cultural gatherings and as art work
Most teepee housing for the tribes ended in the mid 1800's when the new government started forcing the tribes into a federal reserve and permanent housing since they could no longer follow the heard of bison.
