Music of the classical period (1750-1820)
- also called "Age of reason" -the cultural life was dominated by the aristocracy, as patrons of musicians and artist -harmony and texture is homophonic in general
Five Musical Elements
- Meter- regularly recurring patterns and accents such as bars and beats.
- Melody- also known as tune, voice of line, is a linear succession of musical tones
- Dynamics- it refers to the volume of the sound or note loudness or softness of sound.
- Tempo- it is the speed of the underlying beat, it can be fast, moderate or slow.
- Textures- it is how the tempo, melodic and harmonic materials are combined in a composition. It is how layers of sound within a piece of music interact.
Sonata
- came from the word "Sonare" means "to make a sound" - musical composition composed of multi-movement for solo instrument. - the term "Sonare" is applied to a variety of works for a solo instrument such as keyboard or violin.
Sonata Allegro Form
Different types of Sonata movements
- the most important musical structure consist of three disticnt sections;
- Expostion - Development - Recapitulation
- Alegro- fast movement
- Andante- slow movement
- Minuet- it is in three-four time and in a moderate.
Exposition - the first part of the composition in sonata. - introduces the theme Development - the middle part where themes are being developed. - explores the harmonic and texturals possibilities of the thematic material Recapitulation - repeats the theme
CONCERTO
-compost of multi-movement work and it is made for an instrumenral soloist and orchestra, this classical form of music is intended primarily to emphasize the individuality.

Concerto Movements
> Sonata- allegro form with expositions
> has more ornamentation than the first movement.
- 3rd movement: Fast Finale
> usually in a form of rondo, resembling the last movement of the symphony and usually a short cadenza is used.
Sonata
SYMPHONY Derived from the word sinfonia which literally means "a harmonious sounding together".
Symphony Movements
> Sonata- allegro form
> gentle, lyrical, typical ABA form or theme and variation
- 3rd movement: Medium/Fast
> uses a dance form[minuet or scherzo]
>typically rondo or sonata form
Classical Opera
- opera is an art form that musicians and singers perform a dramatic theatrical setting.
2 types of opera
OPERA SERIA: (SERIOUS OPERA)
OPERA BUFFA: (COMIC OPERA)
-This is from Italy. Comic opera made use of everyday characters and situations, and typically employed spoken dialogues lengthy arias and was spiced with sight gags, naughty humor and social satire.
- usually implies heroic or tragic drama that emplous mythilogical characters.example:
"IDOMENEO" BY MOZART
Important terms;
- Singspiel- an opera based on a serious plot that usually revolves around mythological beings such as Gods and Goddesses
- Aria- a separate song, usually for one voice
- Recitative- style of deliver in which a singer can adopt the rythyms and delivery of the ordinary speech
- Bel Canto- Italian phrase that means "beautiful singing"
- Grand Opera- a spectacular opera
- Music Drama- a style of opera that is created by a single artist who writes both text and the music to advance to the drama
Alberti Bass
- a special type of broken chord accompaniment where the chord is played in the order; >lowest note >highest note >middle note >highest note then repeat the pattern.
Famous Classical Music Composers
Franz Joseph Haydn
- he is one of the most prominent composer of the classical period
- he came from a poor family and his music led to his rise to his social status, which is why his life is described as a "rag-to-riches" story
- he was named "father of the symphony"
- most of the symphonies have nicknames such as the "surprise symphony", "the clock", and "the military"
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
- he is a child prodigy and he is the most amazing genius musical in musical history
- he experimented in all kinds of music and composed of 700 works.
- unfortunately due to mismanaged finances he lives his life in poverty
- he composed, "the marriage of Figaro", "Don Giovanni, and "the magic flute" which became popular
- other known works "Eline Klein Nacht music", "Symphony no.40 in G major", and "sonata no. 11 in A major K311"
Ludwig Van Beethoven
- he was the composer who briged the last classical era and the romantic era. He was a talented pianist and composer
- he began to go deaf in 1796 but this did not become a hindrance. He continued composing through the help of an assistant and hearing gadget
- some of his famous compositions were made when he was deaf. His works include:
> symphony no. 3 (Eroica) No. 5, No. 6 (Pastoral), No. 9 (Choral) > Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor (moonlight) first movement >Piano concerto no. 5 "Emperor" in E flat major > symphony no.3, Op 67, C minor and " Fur Elise"
Works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are still popular today. Their compositions are now commonly used as music animated series of popular cartoon companies such as Looney Toons, Warner Brothers, Century Fox, Pixar, etc.
