the olympic ceremony

Olympic Ceremonys are rather a new tradition in the olympics. Sydney opened its games with an aquatic theme to it with, large floats of jellyfish and a large waterfall within its stadium. They also had indigenous dancers and horses with the australian flags, who filled the floor to show the cultural section of the ceremony. Cathy Freeman was the first to hold the tourch lighting a ring of fire around her as a huge firework display filled the sky. TShe was chosen to light the touch some thought as a movement towards Aboriginal reconciliation - dispite rule 50 of the IOC Athletes commission about using the games as a political platform. So who is Cathy Freeman? Freeman is a former Australian sprinter who specializes in the 400M race. Her PB (PERSONAL BEST) is 48.63 seconds making her the ninth-fastest woman of all time. Not only did she open the ceremony, she also became the first Australian Aborignal person to win an individual Olympic Gold medal.

Chosen design

MISHA THE MASCOT

The mascot for the Moscow games was Misha the bear. Misha the bear was designed by children's book illustrator Victor Chizhikov. There was great commercial success in merchandise with Misha and an animated short film was even made. To this day Russians are very nostalgic over Misha the bear and think of it fondly.

Propaganda?

Sources say that the mascot was purposelly created by the children's illustrator to enforce an unthreatening and friendly display to deter from the current politcal situation that the Soviet Union was in regarding the war and boycott.
