Things to Discuss

  • Students’ point of view to EE

  • (Teaching High-Level Concept In Low Pressure)
  • Sharing tips and tricks experience

Rationale

  • Why EE is stressful and full of pressure?
  • How to supervise the student in a low pressure environment?
  • What best practices are fit with them?

Students' Responses

HIGH PRESSURE MODE EE - High Level Concept

  • 4000 word
  • Core Subject
  • Essay Formal academic writing
  • Independent Learning (Time management, Self-management, Research, Writing, etc)
  • Demand Critical Thinking
  • Fail: won’t be awarded!

How to reduce the “pressure”?

BIG Question?

Change: the environment and the mindset!

Writing EE is not that hard! It is just about the ‘head’ and ‘heart’

Best Practices - Tips & Tricks

Best Practice:Tips & Tricks

#1 Teaching High-Level Concept in Low-Pressure Environment

2018 - NOW

  • EE become a subject in a class ( 1 period in a week) and student are free to choose the subject interest & supervisor
  • Handled by EE teacher (in the class), helped by supervisor (during supervision)
  • Research and writing culture is built from Junior high school. We have RCS class and enforcement in language class.
  • Result:
-students have the habits of research, writing essay, and critical thinking skill-students get the same general guidance, time management and monitoring student’s progress is easy, supervision is under control (supervisor meeting and workshop)

BEFORE 2018

  • EE was conducted independently (student work independently through study time)
  • Students are recommended to choose HL subject
  • Monitoring and teaching EE was conducted through monthly workshops from EE coordinator and/or directly from the supervisors during consultation
  • Results: some students have no significant progress, difficult to monitor their progress, lack of supervision, etc.

School Culture

As supervisor = a guide.

It needs process (time, planning, adventure, etc)

Supervisors Role(EE Guide, 2018)

Supervisor's Role in general-relationship

Nature of EE & Requirement

Job Description

Supervisors Role(Esp. Newbie)

  • Get the workshop or detailed explanation from the EE coordinator
  • Study the EE guidelines (esp. Subject specific guidance)
  • Look at the example in myIB/join the forum.
  • Study how to determine a topic or RQ and how to write essay
  • Study about research and academic writing and collaborate with the librarian
  • Keyword: always ask if you don't know! (malu bertanya sesat di jalan)

#3. Use RAP Method

Research: students academic background, character, etc + Student's topic Anticipation (differentiation) : plan what strategies to do in order to guide the students (esp. for difficult students) Practice: apply the planning and see what is the result + suggestion & follow up

Communication

Developing excellent COMMUNICATION skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others.

If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter.-Gil Amelio-

Assertive Communication

It is more to building positive relationship. My right dan your right are clear (Ledger, 2020)3C's: Confidence, Clear, & Control

Assertive communication is what we should all aim for, as it’s the best of both worlds — you meet your needs and the needs of the other person; everyone ends up happy.

The Research and Writing Process -Iceberg Model-

  • 7/8: preparation/draft: students and supervisors work together
  • 1/8 writing: students write independently

Time Management Skill, Giving Feedback, and Technology Skill

Time Management

Technology Skill

Giving Feedback

  • Google apps (Extension, tools)

Practice: reading, writing, critical thinking skill, AND DO CHECKLIST - Pomodoro technique, PRES method

ResearchAnticipation Practice

These are the planning and progress - Checklist

As Supervisor, DONT do these:

Not giving any guidance

"Feeding" the student

Correct spelling and punctuation, bibliography, experimental work or mathematics

Re-write any of the essay, proofread the essay for the error

Students' Problems

Poor Time managemant

Poor Energy Management

Procrastination

  • Have no priority, no to do list
  • Never do "Eat the frog"

Tendency to do everything in the last minute, exhausted, etc

Students need to study and practice how to be productive:Manage their time and energy (productive time)

TIME managementEnergy management

ResearchAnticipation Practice
