LIGHT AND TRUTH
Simplicity is where greatness is
Eduviges Portalet
life
- Was born on december 3, 1826 in the city of lyon (france). she was baptized three days after she was born with the name of francisca genoveva eduviges.
- Her parents were gastón portalet and zelié eleonore couturier, both christians.
- Mother Eduviges was orphaned of mother at age 10.
- Mother Eduviges was admitted to the 12 yearold by her father in the ursuline school due to conflicts with her stepmother
- Eduviges received her first communion in 1838, being a student of the ursuline nuns of villefranche. since this day, she devoted her life to the lord.
- On november 1862, she entered the congregation of "sisters of mary immaculate" recently founded in marseille. she was later named mistress of novices, a position she exercised with great success until her departure to toulouse.
- The youth of eduviges passed between teaching and studying, dedicating many hours to prayer, reading and music.
- On November 16, 1894, after 12 days of gravity surrounded by all her daughters who mourned her, her soul opened like a flower to heaven. At the age of 68 years and 31 of religious profession, she left the winter of the earth, to enter the eternal spring of the happiness of the sky.
Eager to extend her apostolate for the benefit of the blind, she founded an Institute for Blind Workers in Saintes and later also opened a School there.
She had received repeated requests for a foundation in Ecuador, to assist the sick of the Leprocomio de Cuenca. Knowing that this was the will of God, she made the preparations for the trip, sending six of her nuns who, after a long journey, set foot on American soil on July 14, 1889. They quickly spread throughout Ecuador with flourishing works of Charity and Education. Some years later, requested for a foundation in Peru, a group of religious went to the city of Trujillo (1898) where they started the "Santa Rosa" School, which was the first in a series of flourishing educational establishments.
works
Supported by the Spirit of God that guided all her actions, Mother Eduviges began the construction the Institute for Blind Children on Rue Montplaisir 1870 (be eyes for those who do not see). The beginnings of this foundation, like all work chosen by God, had great trials that Mother Eduviges Portalet endured with a great spirit of faith, love and sacrifice.
The Mother Foundress continued tirelessly working on new foundations. On March 19, 1894, she founded in Fanjeaux a School in the Convent with so many memories of our Blessed Father Santo Domingo and verified the purchase of said Convent. On August 8 of the same year, she moved the Mother House to Mazéres and opened a School and Workshop.
The perfume of his virtues and the seed of his holy life would be the germ that would fertilize the garden of the Dominican Order.
influence
Mother Eduvijes left us a clear example of life and helps with the sole purpose of transmitting love and solidarity through prayer, in addition to doing things from the heart without expecting anything in return, that is why mother Eduvijes is a woman of inspiration. and transcendence a clear example is to be light and truth.
Thank you
