Teaching Resources Implications

Teaching English as a foreign language is a great challenge for non-native English language educators. Rigorous training and a great deal of practice is the effort required.

Teaching-learning materials are important for teachers to be effective in their lessons, since they help students to a deeper understanding of concepts and content, as well as facilitate the acquisition of meaningful and real knowledge to improve their performance. Teachers try to make the class lively and interesting, they should be selected with the learning objectives in mind so that language skills can be constantly developed. Characteristics we observe in teaching materials:

  • They help to understand and comprehend difficult ideas and concepts.
  • Help develop learners' interest
  • They make learners active
  • They provide reinforcement for better learning

Teachers become role models in educating students in the classroom, building a warm environment, listening and also looking for signs of problems.

  • The effectiveness of the learning process depends on how this activity develops the learner's skills.
  • Prepare visual and audio materials
  • Know how and when you will use these materials,

Teaching Resources Organization

One of the most important basements of teaching and learning activities is the usage of didactic resources to help the students learn easily and well because if the learners are exposed to a natural learning environment it motivates them to be evolved in the process. (SEVEN M. A., s.f.)

There are many advantages and disadvantages in designing techers´own materials, rather than to use texts or course books.

In order to have a better organization of which teaching resources will be effective when used in the classroom, let's look at the following recommendations.

Determination of objectives

Language teachers face different problems in their classrooms when it comes to the selection of teaching materials.

Teaching English is a challenge and gratifying because it provides access to other cultures, customs and ideologies, promotes interpersonal relationships inside and outside the classroom.

Being an English teacher is more than just the ability to speak the language, it requires working with curriculum, classroom activities, organizational skills and decision making.

Selecting educational resources is not easy; have to consider the needs of the learners, the educational environment, learning outcomes and learning objectives among others.

Factors to be taken into account by the teacher when designing teaching material

The teacher must consider the learner as the most important.

In my personal opinion I very much agree with professor Howard when he says that it is equally important to know about students' experiences (life and education), their first language and literacy levels in it, identify their aspirations, interests and purposes for learning English.

In order to design learning materials, the teacher has to analyze the needs of the learners.

The teacher has to take into account the curriculum with all its implications in schemes and context.

The teacher should be clear about the restrictions that some authentic materials or resources downloaded from the internet have.

Conclusion, some experts therefore recommend collaborative work to take turns in designing teaching resources, sharing materials with other teachers and organizing a place to store the materials produced so that they are available when teachers need them.

Time in some cases is considered a disadvantage for teachers who want to design materials on their own.

Some apps to design teaching resources

The use of technology in the teaching-learning process is of great success for both teachers and students, these allow students who are acquiring a new language to learn with their various didactic resources they provide.

It allows students to participate independently and have more control over their learning, it should be stressed that these classes must be guided to achieve a real learning of the language.

Apps to teach English

  1. Duolingo
  2. Babbel
  3. Busuu
  4. Wlingua
  5. Wibbu English
  6. Beelingo
  7. uSpeak
  8. Meet
  9. Zoom

Digital resources are of great help to both the teacher and the student as they open the door to innovative educational methods and enable tailor-made learning "anytime, anywhere" of the four language skills.(listening, speaking, reading and writing).

Exploring mobile apps for English language teaching and learning

What are students’ motivations in mobile-learning tasks on apps? Students were asked to complete four types of English learning tasks on suggested apps including listening, reading, speaking and vocabulary practice both within and outside of the class. All students reported that they did reading tasks both in and after class. Despite the fact that some of the respondents prefer reading on paper, the average reading tasks they did via mobile devices rose considerably Regarding listening practice, more than 70% of the participants felt apps such as BBC, TED Speech and VOA as beneficial for developing their listening skills. With respect to speaking tasks, 70 percent of the students stated they were useful, particularly for improving pronunciation. This indicates that it could be one of the good ways/channels for EFL learners to practice English.

What are students’ perceptions of features in the English for Academic Purpose (EAP) apps? The results demonstrated students’ positive perceptions of features in the EAP app. 80 percent of the students strongly agreed that they enjoyed using the app, which proved that using mobile devices as a learning tool can motivate students’ enthusiasm. Convenience and high-quality contents were considered as the top two significant features for a good app. The majority of the students revealed that learning via handheld devices had become an indispensable part of their lives. Moreover, resources for general English are believed to be beneficial to academic study by the majority of the subjects. The role of the teacher when deciding materials for specific topics The didactic means have been defined as the instrument that we use for the construction of knowledge, they provide experiences so that students can take advantage of to identify properties, classify, solve problems, among others, at the same time, it serves for teachers to interrelate in a better way with their students, they are presented from a triple perspective: as a resource or instrument that we use in certain circumstances, as a means of expression and communication, and as the critical analysis of information or media content.
