GAMABA

  • A National Living Treasure or Manlilikha ng Bayan
  • Person or group of artists awarded by the Government of the Philippines for the contribution to the country's intangible cultural heritage
  • "A Filipino citizen or group of Filipino citizens engaged in any traditional art uniquely Filipino, Whose distinctive skills have reached:
    • such a high level of ethnical and artistic excellence
    • have been passed on to and;
    • widely practiced by the present generations in his/her community with the same degree of technical and artistic competence"

HISTORY

  • The National Living Treasures Award (Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan) was institutionalized in 1992 through Republic Act No. 7355,
  • 1992
    • the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) began selecting and honoring recipients of the National Living Treasures Award, also known as Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA), through Republic Act No. 7355. It continues to be awarded today, and is handed out in the form of a medal.

AN ACT PROVIDING FOR THE RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL LIVING TREASURES OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN, AND THE PROMOTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF TRADITIONAL FOLK ARTS. PROVIDING FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

Is an inhabitant of an indigenous/ traditional cultural community anywhere in the Philippines that has preserved indigenous customs, beliefs, rituals and traditions and/or has syncretized whatever external elements that have influenced it.

CRITERIA & QUALIFICATIONS

To become a National Living Treasure, the candidate must possess the following qualifications:

must have engaged in a folk-art tradition that has been in existence and documented for at least fifty (50) years.

must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period. works of superior and distinctive quality

must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art, and must have an established reputation in the art as master and maker of works of extraordinary technical quality.

must have passed on and/ or will pass on to other members of the community their skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE CRITERIA IN GAMABA?

A traditional artist who possesses all the qualities of a Manlilikha ng Bayan candidate, but due to age or infirmity has left him/her incapable of teaching further his/her craft, may still be recognized if :

had created a significant body of works and/or has consistently displayed excellence in the practice of his/her art, thus achieving important contributions for its development.

has passed on to the other members of the community skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally Known

has been instrumental in the revitalization of his/her community's artistic tradition

community has recognized him/her as master and teacher of his/her craft.

MASINO INTARAY (1993)

  • Intaray is known for playing multiple indigenous instrument namely as the basal (gong), aroding (mouth harp), and the barbarak (ring flute). Intaray is also known for his performance of kulilal (songs) and bagit (vocal music)
  • Masino Intaray was awarded the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan, or National Living Treasures Award, in 1993.
  • The award is conferred upon a filipino citizen or group of filipino citizens engaged in any traditional art uniquely filipino, whose distinctive skills have reach such a high level technical and artistic excellence.

BASAL (GONG)

  • The basal enlivens the night long fast of the drinking of the rice wine, bringing together about one hundred guest under the roof of the kolon banwa (big house).
  • It is during such occasions that the basal or gong ensemble, plays a vital role in the life of the community.

Kulilal

  • Is a highly lyrical poem expressing passionate love sang with the accompaniment of the kusyapi (two-stringed lute), played by a man, and pagang (bamboo zither), played by a woman.

GINAW BILOG (1993)

  • A Filipino poet who was recognized as a National Living Treasure by the Philippine government
  • Hanunuo Mangyan who was a native of Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro
  • He is considered as a master of the Ambahan poetry
  • Ginaw Bilog was awarded The Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan, or National Living Treasure Award, in 1993. In recognition of his people's preservation efforts of the ambahan poetry, which is recorded on bamboo.

Ambahan - Is a form of poetic literary form composed of seven-syllable lines used to communicate messages through metaphors and images. The ambahan is sung and its messages range from courtship, giving advice to the young, asking for a place to stay, saying goodbye to a dear friend and so on.

LUZON - ORIENTAL MINDORO

LANG DULAY (1998)

  • Was Filipino traditional weaver who was a recipient of the National Living Treasures Award.
  • Credited with preserving her people’s tradition of weaving T’nalak, a dyed fabric made from refined abaca fibre.
  • Lang Dulay knows a hundred designs, including the bulinglangit (clouds), the bankiring (hair bangs), and the kabangi (butterfly), each one special for the stories it tells.
  • She was conferred the National Living Treasures Award in 1998.

T'nalak is a traditional hand-woven cloth indigenous to the T'boli people from the Cotabato region. It is woven in order to celebrate and pay tribute to major life events such as birth, life, marriage, or death within the community.
