STRUCTURE
- Villi increase absorption area 23 times
- Microvilli increase absorption area 600 times
Villi and microvilli
1. the duodenum2. the jejunum3. the ileum
PARTS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE
- 'C' shaped, about 25 cm long, widest in diameter
- runs from pyloris to duodenojejunal junction
- wraps around the head of the pancreas
- receives semi-digested food from the stomach and digestive juices from the pancreas and the liver

- thick intestinal walls
- red in colour
- products of the digestion are absorbed from here into the bloodstream
Tempor Labore
THE JEJUNUM
- last and the longest part of the intestine
- about 3 metres long
- contains villi similar to the jejunum but its walls are narrower and thinner
- absorps mainly vitamin B12, bile acids and remaining nutrients
- pink in colour
THE ILEUM
- a double layer of peritoneum in the abdominal cavity
- attaches the jejunum and the ileum to the abdominal wall
- contains fat, blood vessels and nerves
- distinguished as an organ itself in the XXI centrury
