ATOMIC NUMBER AND MASS NUMBER

LESSON ONE

THE

OCTET RULE

VALENCE ELECTRONS

- are the electrons in the outermost shell of an atom.

THE OCTET RULE

Octa - is a Greek prefix meaning eight. The Octet Rule can thus be called as the RULE OF EIGHT.

States that when atoms lose, gain or share electrons during a chemical bond, the outermost shell should be filled with 8 electrons similar to those of noble gases.

This is the rule followed by atoms involved during compound formation.

+ info

STABILITY

- refers to the strength to stand or a resistance to chemical change or to physical disintegration.

GILBERT NEWTONLEWIS

  • American chemist who proposed the Octet Rule.
  • Spent one year in the Philippines as the Superintendent of the Bureau of Weights and Measures.

DOT SYMBOL(lEDS)

PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS

How will you draw the LEDS?

Write the chemical symbol of the atom.

Determine the group where an atom belongs in the periodic table.

Draw the dots the correspond to the number of the atom's valence electrons.

Examples:

2. Flourine

1. Carbon

Draw the LEDS of the following atoms.

2. Bromine

1. Si

3. Iodine

4. S

5. Kr

7. Be

6. Calcium

8. Barium

9. Silver
