PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS My supervisor said (that) he had been trying to get there on time. PAST PERFECT Paul said (that) Sara had written many letters to her dad. WAS - WERE GOING TO Pete said (that) he was going to start his new business soon.

PRESENT SIMPLE Martha: I wear a coat PAST SIMPLE Martin: Mike bought many candies for us. PRESENT CONTINUOUS Jean: I'm looking for my keys PAST CONTINUOUS My supervisor: I was trying to get there on time. PRESENT PERFECT Paul: Sarah has written many letters to her dad. TENSES CHANGE

We can omit the "that" when using reported speech.
