How are couples impacted by this trend?

The amount of interracial unions is slowly increasing, however our society is still stuck in old beliefs and standards regarding visible minorities.

Individuals in interracial relationships can be both positively and negatively impacted by this trend.

Positively:

  • Being in an interracial relationship allows individuals to be different from each other in terms of race, culture or religion
    • allows both partners to see the world in a different perspective.
  • Individuals in an interracial relationship can be supported by our society and others in interracial relationships.

Negatively:

Racism continues to be an issue in society today and this can make interracial relationships difficult at times. How interracial couples are treated can depend on where they live or how diverse there community is in Canada. Some areas may be more progressive and open minded than others.Interracial couples may experience/recieve:

  • Racial discrimination and profiling
  • Judgement and insults from others
  • Open hostility and intimidation
  • Family disapproval

What are the consequences of not adjusting to, or paying attention to this trend?

Those who are not adjusting to the growing interracial couples in Canada are contributing to racism, discrimination and inequality in our country. This can encourage other people to do the same thing.

Developing and changing as a society begins with supporting this trend of diversity and inclusivity. Not supporting this trend will only hold us back as a progressive society in Canada.
