Mexicali and calexico
Presentation
At 3,200 km, the US Mexico border is one of the longest in the world. Far from disappearing with ALENA, in recent years it has become increasingly reinforced, becoming a major geopolitical issue between Washington and Mexico. In this context, the Mexicali and Calexico region is both a symbol and a laboratory of border and cross-border realities: an exemplary wall and an airlock, twin cities, agricultural overvaluation and new hydro-political issues, maquiladora industries, cartel violence and drug trafficking

The role of art in the border
Following Trump's election, many artistic mobilisations took place to stand up against his nationalist politics. Art has been the most powerful tool, in particular in this period, to stir the imagination of people, unite them and make them realize what they really want for their country. It’s in that way that many artists mobilize themselves. We con talk about JR, a french artist who made “The Giant Picnic” which is a set of eyes in grayscale that served also as a picnic table. The eyes of a ‘dreamer’ seem to look out onto the blue sky, as tea and conversations were shared across the table and international demarcation. A few weeks prior, the same artist did “Kikito” , a gigantic image of a toddler boy peering over the U.S.-Mexico border wall seemingly placed as a way to remind the world of the very humanity that exists beyond the border walls.
The role of art in the border
The wall between the borders is dramatic. There are consequences, and severe ones, including death, family separation and increased violence against people who attempt to cross the border. In 2017, there have been approximately 300 hundred migrant deaths along the U.S.-Mexico border. This is why the work of artists is necessary, It can help the U.S. public reimagine where an alternative discussion about the border would begin. Art are the most powerful tool to shape consciousness and understanding of people about the issues of the wall. So we can refer to Teresa Fernandez and mexican artist who grew up in USA and how paint the border to erase it and unify the two populations witches have been always divided. These acts or arts of resistance demonstrate the capacity artists and activists have to reduce the power of borders and their increased militarization.
