In the middle of the 17th century in El Puerto de Santa Maria opponents of Christianity organized a revolt. Churches and monasteries were threatened with destruction.

One very pious woman, Mary of Guadalupe, decided to save the image of the Mother of God, which she was looking after. She wrapped it in cloth and ran to the sea. -Deliver this to the first port you dock - the woman said, handing over the sheltered image of the Virgin Mary to the fisherman.

The fisherman, seeing the despair of the woman, took the package without hesitation. He only opened it when he was at sea. - You are so beautiful! We will sail without stopping until we get to my hometown, Villajoyosa - he decided.

However, the sea did not favor the sailor. A very strong storm forced him to moor in the port of Santa Pola.

At first, the fisherman hid the image of the Virgin of Loreto. Unfortunately, every time he tried to set sail, the gusty wind returned.- Why is the sea angry?- everybody was wondering.

During the third unsuccessful attempt to leave the port, the sailor did not have the strength to fight the waves. He recalled what Mary of Guadalupe had said to him about the virgin and thought:I would love to take you to my town, but I see that you want to stay here.

He understood what to do to make the sea calm. He handed over the image of the Virgin Mary to the inhabitants, and only after having done so, he could safely reach Villajoyosa.

The Virgin of Loreto became the Patroness of Santa Pola. Every year, on December 10th, we celebrate her arrival with a procession from the port to the Castle, and the path is lit by a fiery glow of torches.
