Excess of genetic material. Which is caused due to an error in meiosis. That error is called: Possibilities of developing an embryo with Down syndrome increase with increasing maternal age. A person with Down Syndrome has 45 autosomes + XX/XY, 47 chromosomes in total. Extra chromosome on pair 21 Down syndrome kariotype: Approximately 75% of embryos with the disease miscarry before birth.
Down syndrome is the most common genetic cause of moderate intellectual disability and the most common cause of certain birth defects and medical conditions. Because of its prevalence in our population and its medical importance, Down syndrome is one of the most studied genetic syndromes.
