Where did the cry of rebellion happened?

"El Grito de Rebellion” or “Cry of Rebellion” is a mark of the start of the rebellion to liberate us under Spanish colonization. These events are important markers in the history of a colonized nation like the Philippines who struggled for independence against the Spanish colonization.

The controversy regarding this event stems from the identification of where and when the cry happened. According to a prominent historian, Teodoro Agoncillo emphasized that it happened when Katipuneros Tore apart their cedula led by Bonifacio. Yet According to some historians, it happened After Emillio Aguinaldo commissioned the “Himno de Balintawak” to uplift the morals of katipuneros after Pact of biak na bato failed.

A commemorative monument was built to honor the heroes of 1896 at the intersection of Epifanio de Los Santos Avenue and Andres Bonifacio Drive-North diversion road and From then on until 1962, the Cry of Balintawak was celebrated on the 26th of August.

  • According to statement of Pio
Valenzuela, declared in 1948 that it happened in Pugad Lawin on August 23, 1896.
  • Gregorio Zaide identified the
cry happened in Balintawak on August 26, 1896.
  • Teodoro Agoncillo wrote in 1956
that it took place in Pugad Lawin on August 23, 1896, based on Pio Valenzuela's statement.
  • For the confusion of dates, it is
because of Bonifacio's movement from different places from time to tome in invading Spanish Government who were pursuing katipuneros. That explains why there are several account of the cry.
  • Milagros Guerrero, Emmanuel
Encarnacion, and Ramon Villegas claim that the event to have taken place in Tandang Sora's barn in Gulod, Barangay Banlat, Quezon City on August 24, 1896.

  • The claim of Valenzuela was deemed to be inconsistent
  • According to Guillermo, Encarnacion, Villegas, all the places mentioned are in Balintawak, part of Caloocan.
  • Several accounts of the Cry can be a result of the Tactic of Bonifacio and his troops against the Spanish Government.
