How to write a restaurant review
B2.2 Blended learning
What is the aim of a restaurant review? (TWO ANSWERS)
- To comment on the place in a highly emotional way, so that you can connect with your readers.
- To put the reader at your table with you, so that they can decide if they want to visit the restaurant or not.
- To complain about it on social media, so that other people know they shouldn’t go there.
- To explain the taste, texture, smell and presentation of a restaurant’s food with precision.

What other aspects should you comment on apart from the food?
- The atmosphere, personnel’s knowledge and consideration, the speed of service and your general impression of the place.
- The reputation of the business, the ethnic background and gender of the staff and other people's personal opinion.
- The staff's response when you told them you're a reviewer, and how to become a Michelin-starred restaurant.

You should start your review with an interesting first line that encourages people to continue reading. What are examples of this? (TWO ANSWERS)
- A line that anticipates what’s coming next: “Who would have thought the dull suburbs of Manchester could produce the most sublime ceviche ever!”
- Directly talk about the food: "The marinara and pesto were packed with flavour, and the mozarella had a great consistency and very little oil."
- A surprising contrast: "Though Zed's has only been up and running for 2 months, it has already won several critics' awards for its outstanding approach to food"
- Use vague words and phrases: "The service was bad"; "The pie was great".

How should you describe the dishes? (TWO ANSWERS)
- Describe from three to five dishes that you tasted.
- Use descriptive adjectives that attract attention ("inexperienced", "dreamy", "authentic",...)
- Describe all the dishes that you tried.
- Use very general adjectives (“nice”, “good”, “bad”,...).

What aspects should you talk about? (THREE ANSWERS)
- The origin of all the ingredients and if they lived up to your expectations.
- Presentation + your reaction: attractively plated or just dumped there like it had fallen out of the sky?
- If the food could be included in a variety of different diets: real food diet, keto diet or intermittent fasting.
- Taste (using similes and descriptive language). Name spices and flavours. Do the mixtures of flavours work together?
- Texture: did it melt in your mouth? Was it soggy (= too heavy) or crisp (= crunchy)? Juicy or tough?

What other points should you include? (SIX ANSWERS)
- the attention of the waiters
- the time taken for serving
- the waiters’ physical appearance
- the decor
- cleanliness and smell

- the price (reasonable, exorbitant, good value?)
- the dishes you didn’t order
