Wanted total and complete equality (white man), eradicating poverty.CREATE A UTOPIA

George Ripley: created the Brook Farm Robert Owen: Creation of New Harmony in an attempt to make a perfect society, socialism in their eyes.

similar experiments Brought to light that utopia is unachievable
Criticism
Tensions between the ideal of individual freedom and the demands of a communal society. The new harmony community was an economic failure. Too perfect, couldn't happen.
Legacy at time
it inspired other similar movements and showed the US that this experiment was not successful
