THE FESTIVAL OF SAN FERMÍN

  • It is a week-long festival usually held in Pamplona.
  • The most famous event is the running of bulls, between 7 and 14 of July.
  • It has become probably the most internationally renowned festival in Spain with over a million people coming to participate.

ORIGIN OF THE FESTIVAL

  • San Fermín is considered the first bishop of Pamplona and this festival is celebrated in his honour, commemorating his martyrdom in France.
  • Originally, it didn’t start on July 7 and there weren’t the same events. In addition, another fair was held, and finally all these events were unified in one. Nowadays, San Fermin starts on July 7, officially on July 6 with the "chupinazo".

WHY THE RED SCARF IN SAN FERMIN?

  • Traditionally, you can wear it knotted around your neck while the festival is in progress.
  • That is why before the "chupinazo" people usually wear it on their wrist, pocket or hand, and throw them to the air to inaugurate the fiestas.
  • Once the festivities begin, everyone ties it around their necks.
