Introduction :

  • Frank Bowe was one of the leaders of the Disability Rights movement in the community and earned him the label "Father of Section 504".
  • In 1980, Bowe was the first person with a disability to represent any nation in the planning of the United Nations (UN) International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP-1981).

Childhood

Frank Bowe was born in Danville, Pennsylvania on March 29, 1947. When Frank was 3 years old, he was diagnosed with measles and given the antibiotic streptomycin, which is thought to be the cause of his deafness.

NOminations

Bowe is featured in numerous Who's Who publications such as Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Education and others. Bowe was honored with the National Disability Hall of Fame in 1994. In 1992, he was awarded the United States President's Award for Distinguished Service, signed by President George W. Bush.

Conclusion

Bowe's first book, Handicapping America: Barriers to Disabled People, was released in 1978. Bowe explains in his book that disability is a cultural construct rather than a personal ailment.
