Prefixes are groups of letters that we can add to the beginning of words, to change their meaning.
There are many common perfixes in English, and knowing them can really help you to increase your vocabulary and understand texts better.
At the same time , you can't assume that everything that looks like a prefix is a prefix. For example the letters un in the word until are not a prefix.
In addition, you can't just add prefixes to whichever words you want without knowing which prefixes go with which words. For example there are a few prefixes that change adjectives from positive to negative. If you want to change the word appropriate to a word that means "not appropriate", you can't just choose any prefix you want. In this case , we would add in, so the negative adjective would be inappropriate.
Remember! * When adding a prefix , we usually don't remove any letters from the original word, nor do we add any letters besides the actual prefix. * We don't usually add a hyphen(-) between the prefix and the word we are adding the prefix to, except with specific prefixes such as : self- , semi - post - and anti -, which we often (but not always) add a hyphen (-) to.
