The Gunpowder Plot
By me lmao
Quick Explaination
This was a failed assassination attempt against King James I by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby who sought to restore the Catholic monarchy from the Church of England. The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605. His fellow plotters were John and Christopher Wright, Robert and Thomas Wintour, Thomas Percy, Guy Fawkes, Robert Keyes, Thomas Bates, John Grant, Ambrose Rookwood, Sir Everard Digby and Francis Tresham.
What about Guy Fawkes?
To summerize, he was captured after failing the attack, tortured , and killed by the state. Even after he was caught, with the gunpowder barrels, due to a warning letter someone sent to the king, he didn´t confesed. The result of this, as you might´ve guessed, was his torture and public execution.
As the objective was to kill King James I, he decided that this day would be remembered from there on.
James's attitude towards Catholics was more moderate than that of his predecessor, perhaps even tolerant. He swore that he would not "persecute any that will be quiet and give an outward obedience to the law", and believed that exile was a better solution than capital punishment.
Thanks for listening :)
