WHAT IS THE INTERNET?

The Internet is a global network of billions of computers and other electronic devices. With the Internet, it's possible to access almost any information, communicate with anyone else in the world, and do much more.

World wide web vs the internet

The internet is the networking infrastructure that connects devices together. The World Wide Web is a way of accessing information through the medium of the internet.

Info

Uniform resource location (url)

It is the "address" of a computer connected to the Internet. Its located at the top of your browser. This address allows you to find the site again. The http:// in the address stands for "hypertext transfer protocol", the protocol for the World Wide Web, and it tells your browser to look for a site on the Web.

LOCATING COMPUTERS

An IP address is a unique address that identifies a device on the internet or a local network. IP stands for "Internet Protocol," which is the set of rules governing the format of data sent via the internet or local network. IP addresses are the identifier that allows information to be sent between devices on a network

Menú

Step by step

How to find your local IP address

Right-click on the Windows logo in the lower-left corner of your screen and select “Settings.”.

Click on ''Network & Internet''

Select “Wi-Fi” or “Ethernet” in the left-hand menu, depending on whether you’re connected wirelessly or via an ethernet cable.

Click “Network” in the center column. Your IP address will appear in the next window, in the entry “IPv4 address.”

network interface card

A network interface controller (NIC, also known as a network interface card) is a computer hardware component that connects a computer to a computer network. There are two types of network cards: wired and wireless. The wired NIC uses cables and connectors, whereas in the wireless card, the connection is made using antenna that employs radio wave technology.

HUB AND SWITCH

Switch is a telecommunication device grouped as one of computer network components. Switch is like a Hub but built in with advanced features. It uses physical device addresses in each incoming messages so that it can deliver the message to the right destination or port.

Hub is a device that splits a network connection into multiple computers. When a computer request information from a network or a specific computer, it sends the request to the hub through a cable. The hub will receive the request and transmit it to the entire network.

Cables and connectors

There are a number of solid transmission Media types:

  • Twisted pair wire
  • Coaxial cable
  • Fibre optic

Cable is one way of transmission media which can transmit communication signals. The wired network typology uses special type of cable to connect computers on a network.

PHOTONIC INTEGRATED CIRCUITS (PIC)

A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) or integrated optical circuit is a device that integrates multiple (at least two) photonic functions and as such is similar to an electronic integrated circuit. The major difference between the two is that a photonic integrated circuit provides functions for information signals imposed on optical wavelengths typically in the visible spectrum or near infrared 850 nm-1650 nm.

Info

Router and modem

A router is a deviced used to connect a LAN with the internet. Its function is to establish the route to be taken by each data packet within a computer network. Recent routers also include a switch. There are two types of Router: wired and wireless.

Acronym for modulator demodulator, the modem enables you to connect your computer to the available internet connection over the existing telephone line. It is used to send the modulating signal by means of another signal called carrier. The modem is not integrated with a computer motherboard.
