weathering

Weathering describes the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on the surface of the Earth. It is often divided into the process of mechanical and chemical weathering. Biological weathering, in which living or once-living organisms contribute to weathering, can be a part of both processes.

MECHANICAL WEATHERING

This is also called physical weathering and disaggregation, causes rocks to crumble. It is the process that breaks rocks apart without changing their chemical composition.

+ info

CHEMICAL WEATHERING

Chemical weathering is a process wherein rock materials are changed into other substances that have different physical and chemical compositions.

weathering AND PEOPLE

Weathering is a natural process, but human activities can speed it up. For example, certain kinds of air pollution increase the rate of weathering. Burning coal, natural gas, and petroleum releases chemicals such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere.

Weathering impact on agriculture

As our climate continues to heat up and the impacts of that warming grow more frequent and severe, farmers and farm communities around the world will be increasingly challenged. And US farmers won’t be spared the damage that climate change is already beginning to inflict.

Info

The combination of advancing climate change and an already-vulnerable industrial system is a “perfect storm” that threatens farmers’ livelihoods and our food supply.

FACTS ABOUT WEATHERING

01

Water, ice, acids, salts, plants, animals, and changes in temperature are all agents of weathering.

03

Water is the most important agent of chemical weathering. Two other important agents of chemical weathering are carbon dioxide and oxygen.

02

Weathering happens through processes or sources in the environment, including events like wind and objects like the roots of plants.

04

Forces like wind and water move the rock pieces. They mix with matter like sand to become sediment. Weathering and erosion help shape Earth’s surface.
