MEDIATION

WHAT IS IT?

Esto es un párrafo listo para contener creatividad, experiencias e historias geniales.

What is language mediation?

Language mediation is the fifth competence defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It can be categorised as: A) cross-language or interlinguistic mediation, which involves an exchange of information between two languages. B) intralinguistic mediation, which involves transferring information within the same language.

What does it involve?

Mediation (or a mediator, intermediary or go-between) makes understanding possible when there is a communication breakdown, either because of lack of accessibility to the information or because of lack of understanding of the language in which the information is provided.

Mediating is not translating, but rather:

Selecting the information to be conveyed because not all the information might be relevant.

Deciding whether extra-cultural information is necessary for better understanding.

Adapting the register and the language level to the receiver.

Making good use of appropriate non-verbal communication skills (in spoken mediation tasks: gestures, eye contact).

Structuring the text/speech so that the information is conveyed in an organised way.
