A Guide to Recasting

During snacktime? YES!

In the car? YES!

Child: want more cracker Parent: I want more crackers please!

Child: car go fast Parent: Yes! The car is going fast!

What is recasting?

It's a technique parents (like you) can use to help your child develop language skills And it's simple! When your child says somehting to you, you repeat what they say *but* correct any mistakes and say it the way an adult would

1.) It helps you check your undertanding of your child! By repeating what she says you can make sure that what you heard is what she said 2.) To your child, your recast seems like a correction! When you say her sentence correctly she is about learning small details in language that are sometimes hard to learn othersise!
