EFFECTS OF VOLCANISM

The thickness of the ash, the type and growing condition of the crop, the presence of soluble fluoride on the ash, the timing and intensity of subsequent rainfall, the condition of pasture and animals prior to ashfall, and the availability of uncontaminated feed and water can all have serious negative consequences for agricultural crops and livestock. If fluoride is present in high proportions, livestock that graze on ash-covered grass might become poisoned and die. Animals that consume ash-contaminated grass can develop gastrointestinal obstructions and die as a result. After an ashfall, there may be a shortage of uncontaminated feed and water, which can lead to famine.

Volcanoes have a large effect on their locality. They produce ash, lava, volcanic bombs, pyroclastic flows and lahars. Ash from large volcanoes has been known to affect global climates. The effects of volcanoes can be both positive and negative.
