A History of American Literature
American prose was similar to British works of the same period. Smith, Bradford, and Williams mimicked the style of the King James Bible, and the Mathers and Williams were bejeweled prose creators.
17th Century
The 18th-century literature was characterized by the spirit of realism and romantic features like enthusiasm, passion, imaginations etc. declined in this period. Reason, intellect, correctness, satirical spirit etc. were the main characteristics of 18th-century literature.
18th Century
America welcomed a variety of literary genres, including novels, short stories, poetry, personal journals and letters, and writing addressing a myriad of topics like politics, science, religion, and philosophy.
19th Century
Important movements in drama, poetry, fiction, and criticism took shape in the years before, during, and after World War I. The eventful period that followed the war left its imprint upon books of all kinds. Literary forms of the period were extraordinarily varied, and in drama, poetry, and fiction the leading authors tended toward radical technical experiments.
20th Century
It has a great impact on American society and literature during this time, American literature reflected the movement of disillusionment and portrayed the lost generation. Many World War II writers have adopted new approaches and philosophies when writing novels.
