In SEAFUEL we extract the H2 from seawater using electricity from renewable energy sources in a process called electrolysis. This process effectively releases H2 as a gas from H2O. The gas is then stored waiting to be supplied to our fuel cell vehicles, which transform H2 into electricity and heat in a clean and efficient way.

How do we separate H2 from water?
Remember: Water (H2O) contains Hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2). Water Hydrogen Oxygen Electrolysis is the process used to separate the water molecule (H2O) applying energy, in this case, renewable energy, obtaining Hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2).

Hydrogen is used through a devise called FUEL CELL The process that takes place in the fuel cell is a reaction where H2 combines with O2 to produce WATER and ENERGY.

What is Hydrogen?
Hydrogen is the first element in the periodic table. Hydrogen does not exist freely in nature; it is usually combined with other elements forming compounds like water (H20). Therefore, in order to use it, we first have to separate it.
Hydrogen is the key elemento in the SEAFUEL projecto.
Hydrogen is used as a energy storage system. There are several ways to in which this Hydrogen can be stored. Hydrogen is not a source of energy such as the renewable energies or fossil fuels, Hydrogen is an energy vector, this is an energy carrier.

What is Green Hydrogen?
In the SEAFUEL project we produce green hydrogen, GREEN, because the energy used to separate hydrogen from the oxygen of a water molecule comes from renewable sources. Green hydrogen is produced and dispensed in a hydrogen fuelling station like this. You see, it's like a gas station, but instead of gasoline, green hydrogen is produced and dispensed.

Just as a gas station supplies gas, a Hydrogen fuelling station supplies Hydrogen. It is a service station where those cars powered by Hydrogen can charge or get filled with fuel.

There will be 8 cars powered by hydrogen and that will only emmit water. The cars will be filled in the fuelling station that won´t pollute either while producing the fuel.

In the year 2021, global warming and climate change are already a reality that all countries must face. The SEAFUEL project was created in secret in an alliance between Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Portugal, co-financed by the Interreg Atlantic Area program, to end the dependence and pollution generated by fossil fuels associated with means of transport.
The scientists of the project have discovered the way to generate GREEN HYDROGEN, a fuel that is produced with renewable energies and that when used by means of transport ONLY emits WATER into the atmosphere.

How does a fuel cell car works?
Hydrogen Tank There is a high voltage battery located at the rear of the car. Conncected to it there are three H2 tanks.
Electric Engine The electric engine is located at the front of the car, this engine powers the car with no gas emissions to the atmosphere.
Fuel Cell The fuel cell is found under the front seats of the car. Air+ H2 = Electricity + water
