VERBO BE - Present Simple

Il Simple Present del verbo To be traduce generalmente il Presente Indicativo italiano del verbo essere (a differenza degli altri verbi inglesi il cui uso del Simple Present non coincide sempre con il Presente Indicativo italiano).

Prima di studiare il verbo BE, ripassiamo i pronomi personali soggetti singolari...

...e quelli plurali!

La forma affermativa e la forma negativa presentano 2 forme: 1) forma intera (LONG) 2) forma contratta (SHORT)

La forma intera sia affermativa che negativa si usa...

nell’inglese scritto formale, per esempio una lettera formale...

nell’inglese parlato, quando si vuole mettere in particolare evidenza ciò che si sta dicendo.

Nelle forme intere il tono della voce cade sia sul soggetto che sulla prima vocale del verbo, in questo modo la frase risulta ben scandita.

La forma contratta sia affermativa che negativa si usa...

nell’inglese scritto informale, per esempio una lettera ad un amico (ma anche l’inglese giornalistico o letterario è spesso informale)...

nell’inglese parlato corrente.

Il tono della voce nelle forme contratte cade sul soggetto, il verbo "scivola via", per cui la frase risulta molto scorrevole.

Anche la forma negativa presenta 2 forme: 1) forma intera (LONG) 2) forma contratta (SHORT) La forma contratta è più usata nella lingua parlata.

La forma negativa intera si ottiene aggiungendo NOT dietro alle 3 forme del verbo BE (am, is, are). La costruzione della forma contratta è diversa alla 1^ persona singolare rispetto alle altre persone

La forma interrogativa presenta 1 sola forma. Si costruisce invertendo la posizione del soggetto rispetto al verbo, perciò nella forma interogativa il soggetto segue il verbo.

Quando ci viene posta una domanda in inglese non è sufficiente rispondere con un semplice 'yes' o 'no', come si fa in italiano.

Bisognerà far seguire il pronome soggetto e l'ausiliare al nostro "si" o al nostro "no" e quindi bisognerà fare ricorso a quelle che sono chiamate SHORT ANSWERS

Ancora una cosa sul verbo BE...

Il verbo BE si traduce normalmente in italiano con il verbo ESSERE. In alcune espressioni molto comuni, però, il verbo BE si traduce anche con AVERE...

Ecco alcuni usi idiomatici del verbo BE

To be thirsty = = avere sete

To be sleepy == avere sonno

To be hungry ==avere fame

To be cold== avere freddo

To be in a hurry = = avere fretta

To be hot ==avere caldo

Il verbo BE viene usato anche per: - indicare l'età: He's 13 years old - indicare lo stato di salute: How are you? I'm fine! - indicare una professione: I'm a doctor - indicare il prezzo: How much is it? It's 20 euros
