Algebra is the mathematical use of numbers and letters. example: 4x or a
ALGEBRAIC TERM
A Term is either a single number or a variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. example: 4t or x
Coefficient
A Coefficient is the number in front of the variable
Variable
A Variable is the symbol used, which is usually a letter.
CONSTANT
- A fixed value.
- A constant is a number on its own
Monomial
A monomial is an algebraic expression that consists of one term
Binomial
A Binomial is an algebraic expression that consists of two terms
Trinomial
A Trinomial is an algebraic expression that consists of three terms.
Polynomial
A polynomial can have constants, variables and exponents, but never division by a variable.
Expression
An expression is a group of terms (the terms are separated by + or − signs)
AlgebraicEquation
An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign "=" like this: x + 2 = 6 That equation says: what is on the left (x + 2) is equal to what is on the right (6) So an equation is like a statement "this equals that"
Like Terms
Like terms have the same variable. Only terms that are alike can be added or subtracted.
