What is holocracy?

It’s a social technology that encourages independence, autonomy, and intelligence. It is also a way to make companies efficient and adaptive through giving a lot of decision making power. Everyone has a role in an organization this way the authority is distributed and everyone participates fairly. It is a system that allows better emergent order.

It’s a social technology that encourages independence, autonomy, and intelligence. Everyone has a role in an organization this way the authority is distributed and everyone participates fairly. It is a system that allows better emergent order. Reliability and adaption are very important points for self-managed teams to solve problems in their area.

Why communication and assertiveness are so important in an Holacracy management?

When you are able to communicate your ideas, opinions and thoughts in a confident way, everyone around you will understand you better and they will rely more on you, which is really important when you have an holocracy management. Also, having both communication and assertiveness will help everyone have less misunderstandings and less team problems

How is team decision making related to Holacracy management style?

In Holocracy it is crucial that everyone knows how to listen and share ideas in order to get the right results, so team decision making is highly important. Everyday every team member gets to contribute to the company they will have almost complete freedom of choice and whoever has the best idea that works for the company that’s what will be chosen, or a brainstorm of ideas will also be used in order to get new prespectives. Having a lot of communication in the organization enters another important point, which is assertiveness. And since it is based on respect, there must always be propper adressing among co-workers.

How does Holacracy makes performance indicators?

Holocracy makes people happier because they feel empowered to solve their own problems, this leads to employees being more productive and fulfilled. Holocracy promotes independence and autonomy. The purpose of Holocracy is to generate a more confortable environment and increase productivity. Therefore its indicators are senior management where they create the company´s mechanism, such as Zappo´s used the technique of points of people.

How has Holacracy changed Zappo's Culture?

Holocracy encourages employees to act more like entrepenuers that way they will stop waiting for exact orders from their managers and bosses. When they changed to this new system people where given roles and autonomy to make sure that innovation and productivity is still going strong as the company expands. Holocracy is not for everyone, cause when they changed 14% of the employees left. Zappos implemented the badge system that lets employees convey skill they have to offer at a glance when trainees are given a badge that they are all ready capable ot competent to do that task.

Cardboard Boxes Manufacturing

Choosing a small family company of cardboard boxes wasn´t exactly a very good expample of how to establish holocracy, but it can always have room for improvement. So what we designed was a management system in which every managerial employee can have autonomy on what comes to decision making in their own area, as long as there´s communication between the corresponding areas with the respective activity each worker is developing. Asking the owner about which things of our proposal would be possible and what would he change, he said that the company is prepared for an open comunication and self decision making system as long as everybody reports their progress. Also his opinion in this new management system is that every industry is getting renovated each year and his wasn´t going to be left back, he is onboard with the progress this system´s results can show.

Team learning

Guillermo : Personally, in this activity I learned about how holocracy is supposed to help through new technologies that help by providing autonomy and intelligence in a fair way to everybody. It is a very effective way to share responsibility through independence. María Fernanda : my learning from this activity was that holocracy enables clear expectations and creates transparent authority at every level. Holocracy is good if you are willing to share some responsibility with your employees. Ximena : Holocracy is a new system that is relatively new to everyone. For people who are already on the job industry it may be a bit overwhelming to change everything around from one day to another, holocracy is so new and innovating to them that in the company Zappos 14% of the employees preferred to leave than to stay and try this new method which emphasizes in autonomy and independence which in my opinion is better for employees because it lets them make their own desicions and makes them feel happier and more confident. For companies that have been around for a long time it also can be hard to implement it and understand it so I think that this new method will be used in emerging companies.
