Methodology

Abstract

This research study aims to explore the concept of Celluloid Shading and the development of it throughout the years in film animation industry. In addition, this research also makes some discussion on why the low and mid budget projects are beginning to shift to Toon shading lately years. Cel shading or can be called as Toon shading is an art style of non-photo-realistic rendering designed to make 3D computer graphics or artworks look there dimensional by creating flat colours on top of a base colour, making the object look three dimensional while still keeping that 2D effect in it. This Cel shading technique is very popular in Japan for years. Since the animation industry in Japan started to change from 2D hand hand-drawn to 3D world. In the western world, using this technique is not only giving the show runner low price to produce a show, but also produce a project much quicker. More artistic look, less CG vibe in final render. The Final prototype if this project will be a rendered images of 3D character and a short animation rendered using Cel shading technique. The images are an attempt to see if the model can be rendered with the same effect as painting while the short animation will be created to test whether the video test can give a similar vibe to hand drawing or not.

1. Doing a research on what is Cel shading and where/when it originally came from. 2. Gathering all the information from online articles and filtering out some unnecessary information. 3.Carefully choose the tutorials from online professional artists, watching how they approach the technique, and shadowing the tutorials. 4.Time to pick what rigs I want to use for this project and carefully think of the environment set up as well as image references for the out come. 5.After everything is all settled. I started to create a scene in maya and reference a rig in it. 6.Working on a short animation at first. I wanted to do a very simple animation, because this project aims for Cel shading technique. So I chose to do a head turn animation. After I done with it, it's time for apply cel shader material into the character and set up basic lighting for a shot. In this case, I was using Arnold as my render setting. 7.Working on rendered images. I took a character model and gave it a relax pose. From here I started to apply Cel shader into a model , gave it basic light set up and tested it with different setting to archive what I had in mind for the out come.

Evaluation

In conclusion the project was successful, and the aims were accomplished. However, learning the new technique for me was not easy. It took me a bit of time to do a research and tries. I headed to some errors at beginning due to learning a new set up material in maya and Arnold. I found that some people do not like the look of it, because it gives a weird feeling of being in 2D and 3D at the same time, but perhaps I think because we all grew up watching a lot of real 2D hand drawing animation, we can not get over it. However, with the fast pace development, the Toon shader is developing over the years and getting to the final stage of it. My difficulty was looking for a good tutorial, there are plenty of videos on youtube but mostly they are not very helpful. For further development, I would like to attend a short course to learn more about this technique and possibly use it for my future need. Finally, I really enjoyed working in this project because learning new thing and achieving something at the end is really satisfy to me.

Aims and Objectives

1. To explain what is cel shading technique. 2. To explain why the industry begins to use this technique in a pipeline. 3. To explain the benefits and limitation of using this technique.
