Plastic Pirates

What is pLATIC PIRATES?

Plastic Pirates is a joint citizen science campaign by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in collaboration with the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education and the Slovenian Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. In the years 2020 and 2021, pupils, teachers and scientists will collaborate to identify microplastic (pieces of plastic smaller than 5 mm) in rivers and their estuaries and contribute to a better understanding of environmental problems and demonstrate how citizens in Europe can work together to achieve common goals.

• Increase the scientific literacy and the enthusiasm for science;
• Spread the value of fresh water aquatic ecosystems;
• Help young students to become better citizens in an environmental point of view;
• Promote international scientific collaboration and bring closer the scientific community and the educational community;
• Engage the young students in the preservation and recovery of aquatic environments;
• Influence regional/national/european policies regarding the usage of single-use plastics and other disposables and the adoption of more sustainable measures.

Conclusion

This project helped us see that our river is not as clean as it sometimes seems and it’s up to us to help, be either by cleaning the riverbanks or by raising awareness, because this affects us and our environment, which we depend upon.
