Wangari maathai
Wangari maathai was the first woman in East and Central Africa to obtain a Ph.D. (in biology) and the first female teacher in Kenya.
In 1977 she started the Green Belt Movement to combat deforestation that threatened the livelihoods of the agricultural population: she encouraged women to plant trees in their local environment and to think ecologically, which is why she called her Tree Woman.
A mother of three, she was never afraid of confronting Moi's authoritarian regime. The safeguarding of human rights, the emancipation of women, non-violence, ecological sustainability and democracy were the objectives, for which Wangari Maathai fought firmly and for which, especially in the 1990s, she was repeatedly detained without prior accusation. .

In December 2002 she became a deputy in parliament and eventually became a member of the new president Mwai Kibaki's cabinet.
Wangari Maathai was a woman who loved her people and did what was right for him until the end of his days.
Wangari Maathai died on Sunday, September 25, 2011 in a Nairobi hospital, due to complications derived from the ovarian cancer that he suffered, as announced by the Green Belt Movement of Kenya.
