Orangutan

About the Orangutan

The orangutan is covered in long, red or orange fur except for thier faces. The DNA of the Orangutan is 97% similar to a humans DNA. The name "Orangutan" actually comes from the 2 words from the Malay language "orang" and "hutan" meaning "human of the forest". The Orangutan has an average lifespan of 35-45 years in the wild and 60 years in captivity. This is because the Orangutan is the perfect target for a hunter since they are big and slow or sometimes, they are killed for food

Habitat

The orangutans habitat

Orangutans are found in rainforests at higher elevations and sometimes, can be found near lowland swamps. They usually live in the underbrush and in middle levels (canopy level) of trees. The Orangutans sleep as well as travel through trees.

Diet

The orangutans diet

The Orangutan is an omnivore meaning that he only feeds himself plants and natural resources (not animals). Depending on the season, orangutans eat diffrent foods. 90% of orangutans eat fruits since they are full of sugar and have lots of pulp. Fig trees are one of the orangutans favorite fruit tree and they are often found where orangutans live. They eat more than 400 diffrent variety of plants. Orangutans have two ways of getting water: from the succelent fruits they eat or drink from rivers and streams.

Climate and Conditions

The RAINFORESTS CLIMATE AND CONDITIONS

Since rainforests are located close or near the equator, the climate is usually warm and wet. High rainfall and temperatures around 15 to 25°C through out the year allows the perfect conditions for vegetation growth. This allows all the species and plants in the rainforest to fully develop.

How Animals Adapted

How the Orangutan Adapted to the rainforest

Since the Orangutan moves through trees, their long arms and feet that looks like a hand, allows the Orangutan to hold on to branches which gives them ease to travel through the canopy level. When (rarely) Orangutans are attacked by a predator, their sharp teeth and exceptional strength allows the orangutan to win close to close combats.

Comparison

Why rainfoest animals cannot live in other biomes

The rainforest is home to many animals that cannot live in Polar biomes such as Antartica. Polar biomes are cold and dry all year round and 99% is covered in ice. This means that many animals in the rainforest that are not hervibores wil die. Many rainforest animals are not adapted to live in Polar biomes on the other hand, the penguin has subcutaneous fat allowing them to store heat in them. They also have feet and flippers allowing them to acces food in the water easily while rainforest animals are incapable of doing this

Map

These are all the rainforest locations. As the map shows, many rainfoests are near the equator.

Eco-System Adaptations

Rainforst adaptations

The rainforest has adapted in various ways to become what it is now. For example: the strong roots from the trees allow them to grip tightly to the soil when strong wind blows. Trees also climb high so that they can go to the canopy level allowing them to access to more sunlight than smaller plants. Since rainforests have a warm and wet climate, it allows many creaures and plants to develop.

Eco-System

Rainforest as an Eco-System

Rainforests are known for being Earths oldest living eco-system with a large area of evergreen trees and high rainfall with warm temperatures. They are also the most diverse eco-system since they recieve alot of sunlight. Eco-Systems help regulate our climate by cleaning the Earths atmosphere.

Plants

Here are a list of the most famous plants in rainforests that contribute to help climate change:

  • Ferns
  • Linches
  • Mosses
  • Orchids
  • Bromeliads
  • Rubber Tree

There are millions of species in the rainforest. The most famous ones are:

  • The Blue Morpho Butterfly
  • The Okapi
  • The Three-Toed Sloth
  • The Jaguar
  • The Capybara
  • The Toucan
  • The Poison Dart Frog
