Neuschwanstein Castle
19th century hilltop fairy tale castle
This castle was built for King Ludvig II as a retreat from the public and wasn't completed for 15 years, 12 longer than estimated. He was only able to live in it for a few months (172 days) and it still wasn't completely done. It was also the inspiration for the Disney castles. It is constantly having repairs done to keep this building together.
Hohenzollern Castle
It was built in the early 11th century and then was rebuilt after a siege in 1423 and then wasn't kept properly, so pieces began to crumble and it was rebuilt in the 19th century. Hohenzollern Castle has been privately owned by the Hohenzollern family for almost a thousand years and they still occasionally stay in it. The Hohenzollern Castle is one of the most visited castles in Germany, with about 400,000 visitors a year.
Schwerin Castle
This beautiful castle was built in 1160, but then a very large renovation took place, keeping only a small part of the original castle. It housed the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg, and is still the seat of the local government. Since then, it has been a major tourist attraction and museum.
Heidelberg Palace
This palace was built in 1214, and like many others, later had to be renovated. It was renovated by King Rupert III, who wanted to expand it. It was also not one, but two castles, and one of them had to be rebuilt after being struck by lightning.
Marburg Castle
This castle was built in the eleventh century and is to this day, a university. the famous Brothers Grimm studied here and this castle was an inspiration for many of their stories. This castle also houses the impressive Museum of Cultural Art and History, which fills five floors.
Wernigerode Castle
This beautiful castle was built in the beginning of the twelfth century as a fortress, but was reconstructed as a castle, but still keeping some of its fortress-like qualities. It is now a precious cultural monument, with an art and history museum with works from that time.
