THE TECHNOLOGY PYRAMID

There are schools around the world where one will see fixed data projectors, interactive whiteboards, computers with internet access. Other schools only have a whiteboard or blackboard, though hopefully the students will have exercise books. But there are some classrooms where neither teachers nor students have anything at all in terms of educational technology. Because of these situations Jill and Charles Hadfield represent these differing realities in a reverse pyramid of resources.

FIGURE 1: Reversed resources pyramid "Jill and Charles Hadfield"

There are lots of things teachers can do with minimal or even no resources

FIGURE 2: Other way up - resources pyramid "Jill and Charles Hadfield"

Teachers should not see this route as methodologies for learning, but rather as tools to help and foster student's motivation.

THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES...

The most useful resources in the classroom are the students themselves. Teachers can get them to write or talk about things students like, ask them what they would like to do in certain situations, can get them to share information about their different countries.

Objects, pictures and things...

Used for presenting and manipulating language

  • REALIA: objects that have a story to tell
  • PICTURES: flashcards, large wall pictures
  • CARDS: selecting, ordering and matching, card games.
  • CUISENAIRE RODS

The coursebook...

COURSEBOOK OR NO COURSEBOOK?Benefits-Coherent syllabus -Authors are well-known methodologists -Satisfactory language control -Resource material: CDs, DVD, CD-ROM -Extra resources or activities

Restrictions Inappropriate coursebooks impose: -Learning and content styles -Units and lessons in the same format -Culturally inappropriate

Blended learning...

BLENDED LEARNING combines the best of two training environments, traditional face-to-face classroom training and high-tech e-learning. For example, a student might attend classes in a real-world classroom setting and then supplement the lesson plan by completing online multimedia coursework.

The flipped classroom...

Learning online...

From emails to simulated environments There are Internet-based software programs designed specifically to offer teaching and training environments online. The idea of the VLEs (Virtual Learner Environments) is that course content includes: written text, audio, video, chat sites, blogs, etc; and can be stored on a website which only course participants can access.

"Teaching unplugged"

Jeremy Harmer talks about "Technology in the classroom" and the importance of not forgetting how to teach.
