THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Voluntary and involuntary actions

Neuron

It's divided up into 2 parts: - The central nervous system. - The peripheral nervous system.

Our nervous system processes the information that we receive through the five senses. It reacts accordingly and coordinates the rest of the systems in our body.

BONES- THE SKELETON

The SKELETON is made up of all the bones in our body. It gives the body its shape, allows movement and provides protection for organs. There are 3 kinds of BONES: FLAT (like ribs), LONG (such as femur) and SHORT (e.g. vertebrae). Moreover, JOINTS are in between bones and there are also 3 types: FIXED (such as the ones of the skull), SEMI-FLEXIBLE (like the ones in the backbone) and FLEXIBLE (e.g. knees).

MUSCLES

The MUSCLES are organs which contract and relax generating movement. There are 3 kinds of muscles: SMOOTH MUSCLES, which cover diverse organs such as the stomach, CARDIAC MUSCLES, which cover the heart and SKELETAL MUSCLES, which are joined to the bones by TENDONS. Smooth and cardiac muscles are involuntary and skeletal muscles are voluntary.

LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM

The locomotor system is made up of bones and muscles which work together to let us move. It takes part in interaction as it acts according to the brain's instructions.
